For many years now, network operators have had plans in place which have enabled businesses to share their inclusive minutes across the number of handsets on their account. This meant that if any of their employee were to overuse their mobile phones, others were going to be away or office based and therefore reduced the need to have separate accounts that weren’t being used.

Since this has been something that the networks have been promoting for many years now, it’s hard to see why companies such as T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange have left it until recently to hit on the idea of offering this type of system to the general public; i.e. the families.

Internet telephony or VOIP uses your phone - the interface we’re all familiar with, but instead of connecting your phone to the wall, you connect it to a box either the VOIP company provides or you buy on your own. This is the modem. You need high-speed/broadband internet for this. Your modem plugs into your cable/dsl modem and now it can ‘talk’ without your phone and the internet.

Your phone lines already do pretty much what VOIP does, just with different/older technology (well, some of it’s new with optics and such, but…).
